Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
It can be defined as the stimulation of specific points (known as acupuncture points or acupoints) which result in a physiologic response utilized to restore the body's energy balance. Stimulation of the acupoints will lead to a biochemical reaction assisting the body's ability to heal.

Acupuncture has been utilized in China for approximately 3,000 years. The ancient Chinese discovered 173 acupuncture points in animals. The medical practice of acupuncture migrated to Japan and Korea around 500 BC, and to France and Britain in the 1600's. It was introduced into North America in the 1800's.

What is the goal of acupuncture therapy?
The goal of acupuncture therapy is to restore homeostasis or balance. Balance depends of the smooth flow of Qi (pronounced as chee). Qi is the vital energy of the body. It flows continuously through 14 major meridians (energy pathways) 24 hours a day. When the flow of Qi is disrupted or blocked illness results. Stimulation of acupuncture points releases or gathers Qi as the body needs to restore homeostasis.

How safe is acupuncture?
It is very safe therapy, with very few side effects noted.

What conditions can be treated by acupuncture therapy?
*Pain management
*Geriatric conditions
*Cancer therapy; Post radiation/chemotherapy
*Musculoskeletal conditions; Muscle soreness, Back pain, Arthritis, Disc problems, Degenerative joint disease
*Behavioral problems; Anxiety, Depression, Aggression
*Neurological problems; Seizures, Laryngeal hemiplegia, Nerve paralysis
*Gastrointestinal disorders; Vomiting, Diarrhea, GI upset, Inappetence
*Dermatologic; Allergies, Hot spots, Poor coat condition
*Respiratory; Feline asthma
*Reproduction problems
*Performance
*Prevention
*Renal/Urinary conditions

How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture points are located in areas containing a high density of free nerve endings, lymphatic vessels, mast cells, and small veins and arteries. Stimulation induces nerve stimulation and increased blood circulation. There is an increased stimulation of the immune system and release of hormones and neurotransmitters (such as endorphins and serotonin). Even though many of acupuncture's effects have been studied there is still much about its mechanisms which remains unknown.

What effects are induced?
*Anti-inflammatory *Anti-febrile *Pain modulation *Gastrointestinal regulation *Hormone regulation *Immune system regulation

Is acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture is virtually painless. There may be a slight sensation as the tiny acupuncture needle passes through the skin, but most animals are extremely receptive to the therapy. Most pets become very relaxed during and after the procedure. Occasionally, an animal will experience a strong "de qi" response and may react. This occurs when a strong release of energy is triggered catching them by surprise. This is not painful and is actually a good response.

What is "holistic" medicine?
This approach to medical therapy involves treating the pet's health as a whole. This includes the animal's body, emotional, mind and spirit. Aspects of holistic medicine include: Acupuncture, Herbal therapy, Energy therapy, Nutritional therapy, Nutraceutical, Massage and Behavior Modification

More time is required to complete a detailed history for this therapeutic approach. Questions including the past and present health of the pet, as well as their living environment and relationship with other pets and humans in the family are an important aspect of our data collection. Our goal is to help restore physical and mental balance for your pet.

Who can practice veterinary acupuncture?
Practitioners must be a licensed veterinarian. A certified acupuncture training course is highly recommended.
